Fred Joseph Fortune, 80, passed away peacefully at his home in Missoula, surrounded by his family on Sept. 21, 2016. Fred was born on February 27, 1936 to William and Cecilia Fortune in Hamilton. He spent his childhood in Butte and Maxville before settling in Missoula.
He attended St Anthony’s grade school and Missoula County High where he met the love of his life, Harlene Page. Fred was active in sports. He played American Legion Baseball and football at Missoula County High School. In 1952, they were the AA state football champions. He graduated in 1954 and married his sweetheart on July 23, 1955; they had three children.
He was independent masonry contractor, his business Custom Masonry, built many schools, houses and fireplaces throughout Western Montana. This includes building his family’s dream home. In 1974, Fred and Harlene started Missoula Fireplace, which was a leader in the sale of clean burning wood and pellet stoves. Fred successfully ran Missoula Fireplace until retirement in the late 90’s.
Fred enjoyed entertaining his friends, traveling, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Harlene Fortune, three children, Diane, the late Steve Phelps, Dave (Laura) Fortune, Susan Fortune, 8 grandchildren: Shawn (Tammy) Fortune, Christopher (Char) Fortune, Mike (Lindsey) Phelps, Andy (Lauren) Phelps, Sarah (Jimmy) Compton, Christopher (Erin) Montes, Patrick Phelps, Lydia (Thomas) Patterson and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home on Saturday, September 24th. The viewing is at 1:00 and the service will be at 2:00 with reception following. In lieu of flowers, we request that that you “pay it forward”.
