Gladys M. Sommers, 94, of East Missoula, died on March 29, 2017 at her home.
She was born on Feb. 10, 1923 in Missoula to William and Ida Henderson. She graduated from Alberton High School where she excelled in Track and Basketball. Although stretching it to say she was 5’ tall, in 1938, she won the team basketball for high scorer in basketball. After graduating as valedictorian she moved to Missoula to work at White Pine and Sash Lumber Co. This is where she first met her future husband, Bert Sommers. They were married in 1942 and moved to Wendover, UT where he was stationed with the Army Air Force. After WWII ended they returned to Missoula. They moved to their current residence in 1947.
She enjoyed camping, gardening, her flowers, sewing and many, many, crafting projects. She enjoyed nearly 50 years at the Missoula Women’s Club where she met and enjoyed lifelong friends. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved a good laugh even with strangers she happened to visit with. She loved her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Bert, children; Allen (MaryAnn) Sommers, of Missoula, daughter, Donna Frechette, of Jamesville, MN, nine grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 18 great, great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, her son in law, Wrey Frechette, her infant daughter, Linda, and an infant grandson, also a very special friend Evelyn “Cookie” Rhinehart.
At her request no services will be held. Condolences for Gladys’ family may be left at www.sunsetfuneralhomecemetery.com
