MISSOULA ~ Hal David Clevenger was born on November 11, 1960 to Clarence and Lucy Clevenger in Missoula, Montana. He was raised alongside his siblings Gary, Linda and Brad. They spent many days of their childhood recreating at the family cabin on Elbow Lake that Hal’s father built himself. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, motorcycling and snowmobiling— really anything that allowed them to take in the beauty of Montana.
After attending grade school and high school in Missoula, Hal began employment at the Bonner Mill, where he worked for over a decade before attending the University of Montana. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1992, and began building a career as a CPA that would last for over 30 years. A lifelong Missoulian, Hal had an ever-growing group of friends, colleagues and clients in Western Montana who adored him. He had extensive passion for the work he did. In addition to working full-time as a CPA, Hal consistently donated his time and skills to family, friends and acquaintances who sought his services. His generosity was felt by all who knew him.
Hal married the love of his life, Mercy Whalen, in 1986. Together they had two daughters, Claire and Molly. He was a proud father who took any opportunity to talk about his girls’ accomplishments, no matter how small. Hal was incredibly skilled, and was constantly building and making things throughout his life, inside the house and out. He inspired his children to do the same, and taught them to always be prepared for anything. Hal enjoyed spending quality time at the Clevenger family cabin on Elbow Lake, as well as road-tripping and camping all over the Northwest when the girls were young. After the girls were grown, Hal and Mercy often made time to travel to Hawaii, and spent weekends at their cozy cabin on Georgetown Lake.
After Mercy’s passing, Hal found new love and companionship when he met Jennifer Schulze, who he married in 2020. When they first met, Hal enjoyed orienting Jennifer to Georgetown and the surrounding lakes via four-wheeler. They lived an exciting chapter together, finding opportunities to travel and often gathered with Hal’s siblings for holidays and meals. They enjoyed spending time with Jennifer’s children, Stanton Schulze and Rachel Schulze-Dike and their respective children, as well as her mother, Dolores.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lucy Clevenger, his first wife Mercy Clevenger, and his brother Gary Clevenger. He is survived by his wife Jennifer; his daughters Claire Clevenger and Molly (Daniel) Russell; granddaughter Josey Russell; siblings, Linda (Jim) Ritchey and Brad (Tracey) Clevenger; as well as several nieces and nephews.
