Janice Lea (Marquardt) Boxleitner, 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Missoula, Montana, surrounded by family on June 12th, 2020.
Janice was born April 14, 1936 in Sioux Falls, SD to Ernest & Esther Marquardt. She grew up on a farm, sparking her lifelong love of horses. In high school, to continue her education, Janice boarded at the Wessington Spring’s High School dormitory, working in the kitchen and dining room to pay her way.
In February 1954, she would marry Arlis Winchester and together start a family. Janice graduated high school in 1954 and attended classes at Wessington Springs College. Their first child, Kevin Winchester was born in South Dakota in 1955. Arlis’ work would take the three to Washington where their daughter, Wanda (Winchester) Johnson, and son Stacey Winchester were born. They would bring their daughter Brandy (Edwards) McKenney permanently into the family when she was 10 years old.
In 1971 she bought a 1000 Honda Goldwing and rode to the Glacier Bike Rally, all around Canada, and to Sturgis with her son Stacey. She was also a member of the Missoula Road Riders Motorcycle Club.
The moved to Missoula where Janice was the head cook at Stockman’s for 18 years. She would then marry her second husband Albert (Al) Boxleitner and move to St. Maries, Idaho. They sent many happy years there, and her children and grandchildren have many fond memories of visiting. Her and Al were married for 25 years until his passing in 2004.
After retiring, Janice was as active as ever with her church, Prince of Peace, going on multiple cruises, travelling back home to South Dakota, visiting Branson Missouri, riding in a hot air balloon, basically enjoying life to the fullest. When she was home, Janice loved playing card & dice games with her family, birdwatching, going to bluegrass festivals and square dancing. She spent the last 10 years with her loving partner Lloyd Crosby.
Janice is preceded in death by her husband, Al Boxleitner, sister Donna Edwards, parents Ernest & Esther Marquardt, and granddaughter Cheryl McKenney.
She is survived by her brother Delor Marquardt and Sister Arlene (Marquardt) Ross, children Kevin Winchester, Wanda Johnson, Stacey Winchester, and Brandy McKenney, 10 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Saturday, June 20th at 1:00 p.m. and a reception to follow at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 3:30.
