MISSOULA ~ It is with deep love and gratitude that we celebrate the life of Joyce Mae Dobie, who passed away on April 8th, 2025, at the age of 88 in Missoula, MT. Joyce was born in International Falls, MN, to Beatrice and Norman Halverson. During her childhood, she spent time living with her beloved aunt Myrtle in Canada, where she formed a special bond that helped shape her lifelong compassion and generosity. Her connection with her siblings remained a treasured and steadfast part of her life.
In 1954, Joyce met and married the love of her life, John Dobie. Their 59-year marriage was marked by deep devotion and shared adventure. Shortly after their wedding, they moved to Frenchtown, Montana, when John accepted a position helping to open the pulp mill. Together, they built a loving home and raised three sons in a close-knit community where friendships blossomed into extended family.
Joyce lived with generosity, enthusiasm and joy, making everyone around her feel special, and never wasting a moment. She loved playing cards with friends, snowmobiling, crafting, and thrifting—often turning her secondhand finds into thoughtful gifts.
At age 86, she moved to Grizzly Peak, where she once again cultivated meaningful connections. Ever thoughtful, she prepared and delivered hundreds of birthday cards to fellow residents.
Sometimes referred to as "Joyous Joyce", Joyce brought warmth, kindness, and a positive spirit wherever she went. Joyce was a constant and nurturing presence. Her love never wavered, her strength was steady and quiet, and her wisdom was offered gently and with care. She led her family with grace, humor, and a heart that made everyone feel seen, safe, and deeply loved. She was especially delighted in her role as a grandmother. Whether her grandkids lived down the street or states away, she found a way to make each of them feel special and was always there to pick up the phone or stop by for a visit.
In her final days, surrounded by her family, Joyce reflected on a life well lived— one filled with love, laughter, and friendship. Her words of advice were simple but profound: “Do everything you want to do” and “Be happy.” In her final prayer, she asked for “Love for the world.”
Her legacy of kindness, courage, and joy will continue to live on through her family, friends, and all the lives she touched.
She is preceded in death by parents Norman and Beatrice Halverson, husband John Dobie II, son John Dobie, III, brothers Sonny Halverson, Wendall Halverson, Keith Halverson, and sisters Grace Averill, and Winnie Smart.
She is survived by her sons Jeff and Jody Dobie, her daughters-in-law Alane and Susan, her grandchildren Kara (Tom) Dobie, Julia (Elijah) Dobie, Jennifer (Lee) Passmore, Jake Dobie, great grandchildren Hayden and Paisley Passmore, sister Jean Isensee, and many nieces and nephews.
An indoor service celebrating Joyce’s life will be held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home on April 21, 2025 at 10:30 AM. Family and friends are welcome.
