Somewhere out there, Margaret (Margy) Ruth Kohl is pointing her teacher finger at a mischievous individual. Margy had retired after 37 years of teaching in Missouri and Montana.
Margy passed away April 30, 2024, after being treated for a second diagnosis of cancer. She was born in Berea, Ohio on May 21, 1945, to Carl and Florence Ross and was the third of the six Ross children. They include Carl, Paul, Shirley, Sue and David.
Her education began in Berea followed by college in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She earned her B.S> degree in education and an M.A. in Computer Education from Lesley College along with a great group of teachers from Helena.
She met her soulmate, Kenneth E. Kohl, at college and they married in 1967. They have 2 daughters born in Helena and now living in Missoula: Stacy (Mike) Jakob and Tiffany(Brian) Meissner. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. As an extra bonus there are 3 step-great grandchildren. Her joy was to watch the “grands” at their sporting adventures and school programs. She also loved having them visit in Helena.
Margy loved adventures and travels. Starting with trips to Cedar Point (those of you from Ohio will remember) riding the amusement park rides (The Demon Drop), to a parasail ride in Mexico, a ballon ride in Albuquerque, a zip-line ride at Big Sky, and a jump at age 60 out of an airplane at 13,000 feet with a parachute (attached securely, of course to an experienced jumper) while members of the family watched! She is still wondering why the family didn’t ride with her!
Beginning after retirement, Ken and Margy set out to volunteer and participate in a Race for the Cure in every state hosting the race. They crossed the states 3 times and visited all 50! One of the races was on the cruise ship to Alaska! Another special race was in Charleston, S.C., when the daughters went with her. Most fun was meeting and working with the committees who put on each event. There were tv interviews and newspaper articles along the way during the 7 years it took to complete the goal. They visited National Parks, Monuments, and most of the Presidential Museums. They traveled with the “Cruise Crew” to visit Europe with Viking Cruises.
She loved reading, hiking, walking and cross-country skiing.
Margy was very grateful for the members of Plymouth Congregational Church, for the retired sinners, for sisters in PEO, for the birthday group, for Rossiter retirees, for the Cruise Crew, and for the staff at Holter where she volunteered for 14 years. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Margy was always very grateful for her husband, family and friends for their support given to her along her journey. She loved the “grands”, especially making projects with them and baking banana bread! They helped to decorate the Christmas cookies each December followed by a trip to MCT to see the Christmas show. Camp trips in the summers made for very special times. She would remind us to think about what is important in the grand scheme of things and to cherish each special day.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Scott, Dr. Cupino, Dr. Berry, and Dr. Weiner for the care given to Margy.
Oh, what adventures she had on her journey through life!
