Mary Roehl Meyer, 86, of Missoula, passed away Wednesday, Sept 14, 2022, after a long battle with Alzheimers.
She was born September 8, 1936, in New Leipzig, North Dakota to Sam and Lydia Roehl and was the eighth of twelve children. In New Leipzig, they lived on a farm and Mary loved being outside — riding pigs, playing with her siblings, and helping with the farm. To her last day, she felt most at home in North Dakota.
Mary and her family moved to Missoula, and she attended Missoula County High School, graduating in 1955. She met Chuck (Dutch) Meyer at the roller rink, and they were married in 1956. They had two daughters, Tammy (Meyer) Holshue and Tracy Meyer.
She was a dedicated mother and homemaker. She sewed quilts and clothing for the family, encouraged the girls to join her in her love of music, and involved the family in various church activities. Mary was an active church member, playing the organ and piano and singing in the choir.
During and after High School she worked at the Bon Ton Bakery and later the Mineral County Treasurer’s office. She had a very giving heart, volunteering at Red Cross blood drives, as a Candy Striper at Community Hospital, and assisting with local elections and registering students for classes at the University of Montana.
Mary loved to travel. Some of her favorite trips included a forty-two-day tour with her siblings to the east coast, an annual trip to her sister’s condo at Lake Pend Oreille, Oktoberfest in New Leipzig, and riding the train across the country to tour Washington D.C.
Family was the center of Mary’s life. Nothing made her happier than family reunions, summer weekends at the family cabin at Seeley Lake, and being surrounded by the love of family.
Mary was truly a special woman, and her presence will be greatly missed; however, we take solace in knowing that Mary is now with her Creator and her beloved family members that went before her.
Viewing and burial will be on September 23, 2022, 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with burial directly after. A celebration of Mary’s life will also be held September 23 at 12:30pm at Christian Life Center (CLC), 3801 South Russell, Missoula, Montana, and reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association.
