MISSOULA ~ It is with great sadness that we announce that Mildred Schwartz or Millie as she was better known, left this world peacefully and comfortably within the home that she built with her husband, Otto, and surrounded by her memories on Sunday July 28, 2024.
Born May 4, 1931 as Mildred Makowski, she spent much of her childhood and adolescent years watching over and caring for her siblings. It was during this time that she formed a deep connection and sense of protection for her family. She was known for her ability to continue to relate and be involved with extended family, despite distance, through endless hours of phone conversations. She married her husband of 65 years, Otto on October 10, 1948 in Wibaux, ND. Millie found joy in raising her five children and being a housewife for many years as Otto was away earning money. She was self-reliant and continued to use the wringer washer and hanging clothes on the line to dry long after new technologies became available. Her home was a place of comfort and indulgence, filled with freshly baked goodies, homemade fried chicken, canned fruits and pickles, pork chops, and her famous cauliflower gravy. Many will fondly remember dinners ready after a long day of hunting or other projects, and the way she always stayed up late to watch movies or old sitcoms with her grandchildren. She delighted in spoiling visitors with their favorite treats and ensuring her home was a haven of warmth, comfort and fun. She also enjoyed tending to the garden and yard with a special fondness for geraniums and her flowers. She had a love of country music and enjoyed listening to music while getting ready to go out. Often, she and Otto would frequent The Cabin Bar so Millie could dance.
Millie had a passion and drive for finding great deals, and her love for turquoise jewelry and carnival glass reflected her vibrant personality. Despite her aversion to the sawdust from the wood mill and the birds nesting in the carport, she maintained a sense of cleanliness in her home, a testament to her meticulous nature. She had a unique gift for finding joy in the simple things, whether it was seeking out and discovering hidden treasures in garage sales, cutting coupons with precision for anyone who might need or use them, and supporting her family through resale of treasures. These transactions created many friendships and connections within the community, and many knew of Millie who sold ice skates or used jeans.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends, who will forever cherish the memories of the special touches she brought to every aspect of her life. Her legacy lives on in the cherished moments and memories of time spent together and the lessons and love she demonstrated. May you rest in peace with Otto, as your spirit will forever shine brightly in our memories and hearts.
