MISSOULA ~ Roy C Miller Jr (Butch/RC), 76, of Missoula left this earth to be with our Lord Saturday, March 26, 2022. His passing was peaceful after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s and kidney disease just as he wished, at home, in his bed.
He was born September 30, 1945 in Missoula to Roy and Pauline (Thomas) Miller, both practically kids themselves at 15 years old. Growing up in Western Montana, he was in the last graduating class of the Missoula County High School before it was split into the current Sentinel and Hellgate schools (1964).
After High School, he joined the Marine Corps. He served proudly for 23 years retiring as a “Mustanger”, beginning at the rank of Private First Class and ending as a Field grade officer, Major. During his Military career, he served in Vietnam, and multiple covert operations. He would promptly correct anyone who said ex-Marine to Once a Marine, always a Marine! NOTE: most of the time “former Marine” was ok, but still always corrected.
On December 28, 1964, he married his soulmate, Barbara. Through thick and thin they walked together, hand in hand, for 57 years. Together they would have three children born in three different states, Helen (California), Carl (Montana) and Rhonda (North Carolina).
Always a man of honesty, integrity and willingness to help family, friends or strangers, his level of compassion was passed on to everyone he encountered.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, seven aunts/uncles, and a younger brother (Mike).
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Barbara, sister Francis, brother David (Marcy), daughter Helen (Brad), son Carl, daughter Rhonda and ten grandchildren (Chris, Daniel, Bradley, Erin, Nick, Zac, Michael, Jade, Crystal and Ashley) and five and a half great grandchildren (Claire, Evelyn, Elyjah, Caleb, Maizelee and baby girl due in August, in addition to many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial celebration of his life and legacy will be held at First Presbyterian Church 235 S 5th St W on Tuesday April 5th at 11:00 am (livestream will be available at https://www.fpcmissoula.org/ --click on the You Tube logo at the top of the page) with reception to follow. Full Military honor burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 7405 Mullan Rd at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation in his name to the charity of your choice.
Arrangements are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory in Missoula.
